The India Honey Market would witness market growth of 14.4% CAGR during the forecast period (2020-2026). Honey is a viscous, and sweet natural substance produced by honey bees. Raw honey collected by beekeepers from bee comb.

It is produced naturally by worker bees using nectar they collect from flowers. They collect the nectar of plants or from secretions of living parts of plants as food. Then they transform this nectar by combining it with specific substances enzymatically for their own, deposit, dehydrate, store and leave in the honeycomb to ripen and mature.

Beekeeping is an old and traditional practice in India. Honey production and cultivation of honey is a big industry in itself. It provides employment to a large section of people of the society. For the last some decades, the consumption of honey in India has shown steady growth. A report from the Indian Government explains that the beekeeping sector is expected to create 3 lakh more jobs as 10,000 beekeeping colonies will be set up by the government. According to the article published in The Indian Express in May 2021, honey production in India will grow by 200% and export by 207%.

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) works actively in checking the quality of sugar. The recent data from National Bee Board reported that there were 1.05 lakh tonnes of honey consumption in 2017-2018. The indigenous honey is exported to the US, UK, Spain, Japan, France, and Italy. The government of India is planning to set up an Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre (IBDC) to promote the production of honey by using advanced technologies. The development of the beekeeping sector directly improves the agricultural output due to increased pollination. Also, under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), beekeepers and farmers are encouraged to use scientific practices by seminars and workshops to get better output. The Government of India is granting help to the beekeepers in developing business through R&D activities, innovation, commercialization, and exporting. The beekeeping sector in India is facing challenges due to drastic climatic change in the country.

Dabur honey, Honey Basket, Baidyanath Honey, Kapiva, Organica, Patanjali, and Barosi Honey are some of the major brands of honey in India. These brands are putting their best effort to expand their business in local as well as overseas markets. Dabur is one of the key market players in the honey industry in India. This company expanded its business by establishing Mobile Honey Testing Lab in the year 2017. This on-the-wheel lab designed specifically to minimize the adulteration in honey, which ensures the purity of the honey. So the beekeepers can easily test the purity of their honey from this Mobile Honey Testing Lab. Also in 2016, Dabur launched a range of honey fruit spreaders that helped them to make a strong grip in the consumer market. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in 2020 revised the standard for honey in order to ensure the quality of honey to be exported and imported by the producers.

The global economy has been drastically affected by COVID -19 crisis. Due to the complete lockdown in India, the air quality improved and a substantial decrease in the pesticides in the environment. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has recorded a significant increase in the production of honey during the lockdown period.

Honey is very rich in vitamins and natural minerals. Honey is used in processed foods, beverages, jellies, and jams. The increasing concern about health is one of the factors leading to increased consumption among the health-conscious population. There are various health benefits of honey, thus it is used as an important ingredient in healthcare and beauty products.
